Greensboro (originally spelled Greensborough) was formed in 1808. Named after Major General Nathanael Greene who was famous for being the commandor of the "Battle of Guilford Court House", Greensboro is the largest city in Guilford County. Known as the "Gate City" for its early status as a transportation hub for North Carolina, Greensboro has grown into one of the largest cities in North Carolina.
During Greensboro early years, the city was home to much of the industrial companies in central North Carolina. The original growth was due to the presence of Cone Mills, which was a major Textile manufacturer. As the textile industry as decreased in both North Carolina and the United States, Greensboro has again transformed itself. Major Life Insurance carrier Jefferson Pilot, called Greensboro home until it was purchased in 2000's.
